Buying the wrong sleeve size is one of the most common (and most annoying) mistakes in the hobby — the sleeve either won't close over the card or leaves it loose enough to slide around. Here's a straightforward size reference.
Standard size (Magic: The Gathering, most TCGs) — 66 x 91mm
This is the most common card size and covers Magic: The Gathering, most modern trading card games, and the majority of board game cards. If you're not sure what size you need, this is the size to check first.
Mini size (Yu-Gi-Oh!, some board games) — 44 x 68mm
Yu-Gi-Oh cards and a number of smaller-format board games use this narrower size. Standard sleeves will not fit these cards properly — they'll be visibly loose.
Tarot / oversized — 70 x 120mm
Tarot decks and some oracle card sets use this larger format. It's also common for oversized board game reference cards.
Smaller board game formats — 35PT and similar
Many modern board games use compact custom card sizes for resource or action cards, often specified directly in the rulebook or on the publisher's site. When in doubt, measure a card with a ruler before ordering — sleeve manufacturers are usually within 1-2mm of the stated dimensions, so a card that's noticeably off the standard sizes above needs its exact size checked.
A quick way to check what you have
- Measure width first, then height, in millimetres.
- Round down slightly — sleeves are sized to fit snugly, not loosely.
- If you're sleeving for regular shuffling and play (not just storage), prioritise a matte or textured finish over glossy for grip.
